LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Hunter Richardson tallied runner-up honors today as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team accounted for its best round of the Little Rock First Tee College Classic, held at Chenal Country Club.
For the third straight round, Richardson fired a 71 (-1) to finish the tournament with a 213 (-3). That was tied for the second-best score in the 78-man field and was only one shot behind medalist Zach Coats (212, -4) of host Little Rock.
As a team, the Skyhawks shot a 298 (+10) today, making the biggest jump up the standings of any squad in the field. UT Martin closed out the 54-hole tournament in 10th place with an overall score of 902 (+38).
“We played through some rain today, which made the golf course all kinds of wet and muddy,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “The scores may not show it but we played well today. We were not pleased with how we played the first two rounds – we had too many double bogeys and three-putts. I was proud of the way we bounced back from a bad day.”
Richardson stashed away a team-high four birdies today, all of which came in a span of 11 holes. The junior out of Clarksville, Tenn. finished second in the field in par-3 scoring (2.75, -3) and birdies (10) in the tournament.
“Hunter’s iron play today was unbelievable,” Carpenter said. “When you factor in the weather and these conditions, he had an extra special tournament.”
Tyler Guy generated the second-best score for the Skyhawks today, tallying a 73 (+1) with a pair of birdies. Austin Swafford and Jack Story each shot a 77 (+5) while Gavin Shellnut posted a 78 (+6) this morning.
For the tournament, Guy shot a 228 (+12) while Swafford tallied a 230 (+14). Shellnut and Story both finished with a 234 (+18) for UT Martin. Swafford tied for the team lead with 10 birdies while Story placed second on the squad with 36 pars in the tournament.
The Skyhawks return to action on April 2-4 when they travel to the Red Wolves Classic, which will be played at Ridge Pointe Golf Course in Jonesboro, Ark.
