BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin athletes Ann Asipan and Jonathan Conley made history by becoming the first Skyhawk pair to ever sweep adidas Ohio Valley Conference Track Athlete of the Week honors after a weekend of strong performances at the Rhodes Invitational.
A native of Iten, Kenya, Asipan continues to rewrite the program track record books throughout a decorated career. In her most recent outing, Asipan posted a record-breaking 5k time of 16:39.71 to not only win the event in a loaded 66-athlete field but demolish the program’s previous mark by over 86 seconds.
Asipan’s time not only served as a new program benchmark, but ranked as the fastest time in the OVC this season. In her pursuit of a spot in the upcoming NCAA East Regional Championship, Asipan’s time ranked first in the region and second nationally.
Hailing from Smyrna, Tenn., Conley posted a big weekend in the Rhodes Invitational. Conley got things started in the 200m event where he posted a blistering time of 22.63 to set yet another program record – besting the previous mark which was set during the 1999 season. He then returned to the track in the 800m dash by posting a time of 1:54.24 to claim the event title in the 39-man field while finishing just a second off his own program record. By comparison, Conley was over two seconds faster in his first outdoor meet of 2017 than last season.
Conley’s 800m time ranked as the fastest in the OVC this season while his 200m time ranks third.
“It has been fun to watch how hard these athletes have worked to become consistent performers, setting several school records,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “It is certainly exciting to see the pair sweep the weekly honors and it serves as a great recognition for our program. We can’t wait to see how they will progress as the season goes along. We still have more to show.”
The pair will return to the track with an appearance in the Bill Cornell Classic hosted by Southern Illinois on Saturday, March 25.
