SLOW START DOOMS SKYHAWKS IN SETBACK AT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
March 17, 2017
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – A slow start for the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team resulted in a 14-1 loss to Southeast Missouri on Friday evening. The Redhawks tallied runs in each of the first four innings en route to their first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season.
Southeast Missouri (8-7, 1-3) used an RBI-single off the bat of Dan Holst in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead, before pushing across six runs on three hits in the second inning to take the commanding 7-0 advantage. The Skyhawk pitching staff surrendered four walks in the opening two innings and were plagued by frequent base on balls all night.
The Redhawks tacked on two more runs in the third on a homer by SEMO infielder Danny Wright and an RBI-double by Holst to push the lead out to 9-0. Two unearned runs crossed for the Redhawks in the fourth when Southeast Missouri pushed across runs on a throwing error and a wild pitch to extend the lead to 9-0.
UT Martin (7-8, 1-1) was able to get on the board in the seventh when catcher Dan Kerwin laced a double into right-center field to score freshman Anthony Adduci. It was Kerwin’s third double and seventh RBI on the season. However the Skyhawk offense could not manage to trim the deficit anymore as Southeast Missouri tacked on two runs in the seventh and an additional run in the eight to give them the 14-1 victory. As a staff, UT Martin walked 12 Redhawk hitters.
Lefty Dom Bazzani (1-2) took the loss for UT Martin as Clay Chandler (3-2) picked up the victory for the Redhawks. Adduci, Kerwin, Connor Aube, Creighton Eldridge, Tyler Albright, Keylen Steen and Ryan Helgren each picked up hits in the loss for the Skyhawks.
These two teams return to action tomorrow afternoon for game-two of the three-game set. First pitch from Capaha Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
