MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will look to build off one of its most impressive wins of the season when it travels to Campbell for a second round tilt in the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Tipoff from Gore Arena in Buies Creek, NC is set for 6 p.m. CST on Monday, March 20.
The Skyhawks (22-12) are coming off an 89-75 wire-to-wire victory over UNC Asheville on Thursday, defeating a squad who had the highest RPI (73) and most victories (23) in the 26-team CIT field. In that game, UT Martin never trailed and led by as many as 21 points as the Skyhawks connected on 59.1 percent (13-for-22) of their attempts from three-point land.
Thursday’s triumph was UT Martin’s fifth postseason win (all in the CIT) in the last three years, as the Skyhawks are the only Ohio Valley Conference team to notch at least one postseason win in each of the past three seasons. The victory also equaled a single-season program record for wins (previously set in 2008-09).
This game features the second straight Big South Conference opponent for UT Martin, as the Skyhawks are 6-3 all-time against current members of the Big South. UT Martin carries a six-game winning streak against Big South foes into the CIT second round, as the Skyhawks have not lost to a Big South squad since Dec. 21, 2001.
Campbell (18-17) has won five of its last six games, with its lone loss in that span coming at the hands of No. 1 seed Winthrop in the Big South Tournament championship game. The Camels opened their participation in the CIT with a 98-79 home rout of Houston Baptist on Tuesday.
Chris Clemons is one of the nation’s most potent scorers, as he ranks third in Division-I basketball with 25.0 points per outing. The sophomore guard dialed up a conference record 51 points against UNC Asheville in the Big South Tournament and is coming off 39 points in the aforementioned CIT win over Houston Baptist.
