SKYHAWKS RETURN TO MARTIN FOR MID-WEEK SHOWDOWN WITH REGIONAL RIVAL BETHEL
March 6, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will return to Skyhawk Field to take on Bethel University on Tuesday, Mar. 7. The Skyhawks maintain one of the best home records (5-1) in all of Division-I baseball and will look to build off their recent success against the Wildcats.
UT Martin (5-4) is coming off a tough weekend at the First Pitch Invitational held in Greenville, SC. The Skyhawks dropped decisions of 3-2 to Presbyterian, 11-3 to Furman and 6-1 to Michigan State in their first road tests of the young season. Dan Kerwin, Tyler Albright and Ryan Helgren each recorded multi-hit games over the weekend, while Creighton Eldridge notched his first career homerun on Friday afternoon against Presbyterian. The Skyhawks were plagued by six errors over the three-game span.
The Skyhawks are led offensively by outfielder Tanner Wessling. The Kent, Wash. native is batting .428 on the year with three doubles and six RBI’s. Second baseman Tyler Albright recently saw his eight-game hitting streak come to an end on Sunday against Michigan State. Despite that contest being the first game all season that Albright did not either drive-in or score a run, the redshirt-junior still maintains a .400 average and leads the team with seven RBI’s.
Head coach Rick Robinson and UT Martin will now turn their attention to regional rival Bethel in what will be the only matchup between the two squads this season. This will be the second meeting against the Wildcats in the Robinson era with the sole matchup coming on April 8, 2015, where the Skyhawks picked up a 12-9 victory. UT Martin will look to improve on its dominant 47-7 all-time record against the Wildcats.
Bethel (10-8) is under the direction of veteran coach Rusty Thompson who is in his 10th season with the Wildcats. Offensively, Bethel is led by junior Kendall Adkinson. The infielder is hitting .360 on the year, driving in 16 runs and tallying three homers. The top pitcher for the Wildcats is junior Steven White (2-0). The 6-0 left-hander has tossed 16.2 innings on the season recording a 1.08 ERA.
UT Martin is expected to send out freshman Winston Cannon for his first collegiate start. First pitch from Skyhawk Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
