The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to close out the regular season on a high note with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State on Saturday, Feb. 25. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. as the frontend of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s basketball team with Senior Day festivities to take part prior to tipoff. Fans are also encouraged to “White Out” the Elam Center.

The Skyhawks (10-18, 7-8 OVC) enter the season finale currently in a five-way tie for fourth place in the OVC standings while currently fighting with Murray State, Austin Peay, Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech for the final four spots in next week’s OVC Basketball Championship. The squad is looking to punch its eighth consecutive trip to the conference tournament during the Kevin McMillan era – entering as the top seed four times, second once and fourth twice.

UT Martin suffered a setback in its most recent outing, falling to Austin Peay 85-60 on Wednesday evening. In the contest the Skyhawks struggled to shoot from the floor while junior Janekia Mason marked the only player in double figures for the visitors with a career-high 16 points along with five rebounds. The Skyhawks will look to bounce back from a sub-par performance on the shoulders of Kendall Spray (12.8 ppg), Myah Taylor (12.6 ppg), Ashton Feldhaus (11.3 ppg) and Emanye Robertson (10.5 ppg) while honoring the team’s lone senior Jessy Ward (6.9 ppg) prior to the contest.

Murray State (15-13, 7-8 OVC) travels to the Elam Center looking to snap a brief two-game losing streak after losses to SIUE and Southeast Missouri most recently. In the team’s last outing, the Racers dropped an 80-67 decision to the visiting Redhawks to remain in a tie for one of the final berths in the upcoming tournament. The Racers boast OVC Player of the Year candidate Ke’Shunan James who ranks second in the OVC in scoring with 20.2 ppg while averaging 7.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game. The squad also features LeAsia Wright (14.3 ppg), Bria Bethea (11.6 ppg) and Abria Gulledge (10.1 ppg) in double figures.

Saturday’s contest marks the 83rd meeting between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a 48-34 advantage. The Skyhawks have won eight of its last nine contest against the Racers – including a 90-70 road victory back on Jan. 28. In the contest the Skyhawks posted five players in double figures along with a pair of double-doubles. Murray State last picked up a victory in the Elam Center on Jan. 5, 2013.

The game serves as a matchup of two of the OVC’s all-time wins leaders in UT Martin’s McMillan and Murray State’s Rob Cross. McMillan currently ranks fifth all-time with a 152-101 record in eight seasons while Cross joined the top-10 early this year with a 120-146 record in nine years.

The game also serves as the team’s annual White Out with fans encouraged to wear white. The contest will be streamed live, free of charge, courtesy of the OVC Digital Network at the link above.
