SKYHAWK WOMEN'S HOOPS SUFFERS 85-60 SETBACK AT AUSTIN PEAY
February 22, 2017
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team proved to be no match for a hot-shooting Austin Peay squad before ultimately dropping the Ohio Valley Conference road matchup 85-60 on Wednesday night.
The Skyhawks (10-18, 7-8 OVC) snapped a four-game winning streak in the contest by struggling in nearly every facet of the game. The squad shot just 32.3 percent from the floor while committing 17 turnovers and losing the battle of the boards by 17. Janekia Mason served as the only player to reach double figures for the Skyhawks with 16 points and five rebounds.
Austin Peay (13-15, 7-8 OVC) commanded the game from the opening tip by shooting 46.8 percent from the field while knocking down 11 three-pointers and dishing out 21 assists. Brianne Alexander led all scorers with 22 points off the bench while Keisha Gregory notched a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. April Rivers (13 points) and Beth Rates (11 points) also scored in double figures.
The home squad would find its groove early and often in the first half. With the game staying close through the early parts of the first quarter, Austin Peay would push its margin up to as high as nine points on a pair of occasions in the period. After one quarter of play, the Govs would hold a 24-17 advantage.
The Govs would look to build upon their advantage in the second quarter despite playing much of the period without their leading scorer Banks. After watching UT Martin trim the margin to as close at five points on the opening basket, Austin Peay would string together a 21-4 run to push its advantage back out to 22 points. An abundance of three-pointers would carry much of the run’s load while Alexander became the only player in double figures at halftime while the Govs hold a 48-25 lead.
Austin Peay would completely control the second half, outscoring UT Martin 29-15 in the third quarter alone before pushing the margin out to as high as 42 points midway through the fourth. UT Martin would outscore the Govs by 12 in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling 85-60.
UT Martin will look to keep its season alive in a critical season finale matchup against OVC rival Murray State on Saturday, Feb. 25. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. with Senior Night festivities to take part before the game while fans are encouraged to “White Out” the arena.
