The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will hit the road for the final time in the regular season with a trip to Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Tipoff from the Dunn Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (10-17, 7-7 OVC) enter the contest looking to stay hot as the team attempts to solidify a spot in next week’s OVC Basketball Championship after entering the final week tied for fourth place in the league standings. UT Martin is riding a four-game winning streak while posting victories in six of the last seven contests beginning with the team’s win over Austin Peay last month.
In the squad’s most recent contest, UT Martin secured an 82-73 road victory at Southeast Missouri in a game which saw the lead change hands 12 times and where each team made 14 three-pointers. For the Skyhawks, freshman Kendall Spray earned her fourth adidas OVC Freshman of the Week honor after scoring a game-high 26 points while making all of eight of her attempts from beyond the arc. Spray was joined in double figures by Ashton Feldhaus (17 points, eight rebounds), Myah Taylor (11 points) and Janekia Mason (10 points, 10 rebounds).
Austin Peay (12-15, 6-8 OVC) is looking to snap out of a funk which has seen the team drop three consecutive matchups and four of its last five overall. The Governors are led by OVC Player of the Year candidate Tearra Banks who averages 19.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. So far this season, Banks has posted nine double-doubles and nine games with 25 points or more.
Wednesday’s matchup with mark the 84th meeting between the two programs with Austin Peay holding a 44-39 series advantage. Despite the series disadvantage, UT Martin has controlled the series as of late by winning 10 of the last 11 meetings – including an 83-80 victory early this season on Jan. 25. In the previous matchup, Ashton Feldhaus and Myah Taylor each scored 23 points to lead the Skyhawks while Tearra Banks tallied 27 points and nine rebounds.
