SOFTBALL SKYHAWKS LOOK TO IMPRESS AT ALABAMA STATE TOURNAMENT

The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will look to build upon its strong opening weekend with an appearance in the four-game Alabama State Tournament set to begin on Friday, Feb. 17-18.
The Skyhawks (4-0) will open the tournament against Akron on Friday afternoon at noon before taking on tournament host Alabama State at 2:30 p.m. The squad will then wrap up the tournament against Fort Wayne on Saturday at 11 a.m. before completing the weekend against Akron once again at 1:30 p.m.
UT Martin is coming off a season-opening weekend in which the team posted a perfect 4-0 mark at the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Classic. As a whole the Skyhawk offense outscored their opponents by a score of 33-7 while posting a .359 batting average with three home runs and 28 RBIs. The squad also remained perfect by swiping 14 stolen bases – led by Alicia Hansen’s four.
Offensively the team saw four different players lead the squad with five hits each in Alli Fulcher, Renate Meckl, Rachel Williams and Lauren Myers. Williams posted a strong weekend in her Skyhawk debut, notching a .417 batting average with a home run and seven RBIs – including a grand slam. Jodie Duncan (one home run, five RBIs) and Gracyn McBride (one home run, four RBIs) also posted home runs.
UT Martin’s pitching staff held opposing offenses in check throughout the tournament, limiting its foes to just seven runs and an .148 batting average in 25 innings of work. Senior Alyssa Vanlandingham (1-0, 0.00 ERA) tossed the program’s seventh no-hitter against Mississippi Valley State, striking out five in six innings of work. Senior Brooke Kennedy (2-0, 3.50 ERA) notched a pair of complete games, striking out 13 in 14 innings of work. Sara Hooten (1-0, 0.00 ERA) also picked up her first career victory for the Skyhawks, tossing four scoreless innings against Coppin State.
This marks the Skyhawks first appearance in the Alabama State Tournament since the 2009 season. The Skyhawks hold a 10-1 series advantage against tournament foes Akron (4-1), Alabama State (2-0) and Fort Wayne (4-0).
Akron (1-4) is led by Savannah Fruin (.385 average, seven RBIs) and Lexie Handley (1-2, 5.73 ERA). Alabama State (1-4) is paced by Perry Hindi (.500 average, two home runs, four RBIs) and Vanessa Bradford (1-2, 5.25 ERA). Fort Wayne (0-4) is led by Amber Davis (.364 average, one RBI) and Bailey Benefiel (0-2, 5.91 ERA).
