The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to continue its pursuit of a berth in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship with a rematch against Eastern Illinois on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Skyhawks (7-17, 4-7 OVC) will close out their homestand with a matchup against Eastern Illinois, serving as a rematch of the two team’s earlier meeting this season which saw the Panthers pull away late for an 80-70 overtime victory on Jan. 18. Since the two team’s last meeting, the Skyhawks have won three of their last four contests and have climbed into a tie for the final spot in the OVC Basketball Championship with five games to play.
In UT Martin’s most recent contest, the Skyhawks picked up a 66-56 home victory over Eastern Kentucky. Three different players scored in double figures led by the play of junior Ashton Feldhaus who picked up her fourth consecutive adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week honor after posting a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Fellow junior Janekia Mason also flirted with a double-double, tallying 14 points and nine rebounds while freshman Kendall Spray tossed in 11 points to round out the Skyhawks in double figures.
Eastern Illinois (8-15, 4-7 OVC) enters the contest in a similar position as the Skyhawk, locked in a four-way tie for eighth place in the league standings. The Panthers won in their last outing, knocking off visiting Tennessee Tech 54-46 on Saturday afternoon with Grace Lennox and Erica Brown each scoring 13 points. Lennox leads the squad with 15.8 points and 3.5 assists per game while Brown averages 11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
Wednesday’s matchup marks the 49th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 30-18 series advantage. The Skyhawks dropped the team’s earlier matchup against the Panthers in an overtime battle where Spray tallied a career-best 33 points along with eight made three-pointers to lead all scorers. For the Panthers, Allison Van Dyke led the squad with 23 points of her own. UT Martin hopes its home court advantage will prove valuable as the Skyhawks have won seven straight against the Panthers in the Elam Center.
