MARITN, Tenn. – The No. 19 nationally ranked University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team will head to Morehead State this Saturday, Feb. 4 to compete in the two-day Ohio Valley Conference championships.

“A number of our athletes have fired national class scores at times throughout this season,” said head coach Bob Beard.  “We have shot well in either the smallbore or the air rifle, but we have yet to perform well at both in the same event. Hopefully this is the weekend that we can put everything together and give ourselves a chance to win.”

The Skyhawks have used the fall and early spring to hone in and focus on producing more consistently in their outings. Several shooters have notched career-best numbers this year and will be looking to contribute this weekend as UT Martin is looking to capture their first ever OVC title. Beard, who is a three-time OVC Coach of the Year award recipient (2000, 2011, and 2014), will lead both Skyhawk teams into the championships.

Joe Martin, a 2016 member of the Air RIfle All-OVC Second Team, and Kaitlin Korinek, a recent member of the prestigious UT Martin “590” club with the program’s fourth best score ever of 594 in the air rifle, will lead an experienced group of shooters on the mixed squad. Alex Tamboli, Alex Bapties, Brigitte Curcio and Logan Hunt will round out the team for the Skyhawks. Andre Delcazo, who has competed most of this season as an individual, will also be shooting this weekend for UT Martin.

The women’s team perhaps has seen the most improvement this season with each member of the squad setting a new career-best in one of the two disciplines. Senior Alyson Sylvester set career-highs in both air rifle (575) and smallbore (570) this past week and will be the lone senior to compete for the women. Jennifer Plocinik, Amanda Mayo, Brianna Sawyers, Ashley Coots, and Lindsey Flint will each be looking to make an impact for the women’s squad.
