The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball will host Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 4 on Pink Out Night. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. and serves as the front end of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s basketball team.
The Skyhawks (6-17, 3-7 OVC) will return home to continue its push towards an OVC Tournament berth as they hit the home stretch with just six games left in the regular season. In the team’s last time out, UT Martin dropped its 11th road contest of the season with an 81-71 setback at Tennessee Tech on Wednesday evening. In the contest, the Skyhawks could not overcome a strong third quarter push by the home squad while allowing 32 fast break points.
UT Martin saw the team’s leading scorer Myah Taylor (12.8 ppg) led the way, tossing in a team-high 18 points along with five rebounds in the contest. Reigning OVC Player and Newcomer of the Week Ashton Feldhaus enjoyed another strong night, tallying 16 points to move her scoring average to 19.2 points per game over the last six contests. Junior Janekia Mason (10 points, seven rebounds) and Emanye Robertson (12 points, five assists) also scored in double figures against the Golden Eagles.
Eastern Kentucky (8-14, 5-4 OVC) enters the contest on an upswing after recently snapping a three-game losing streak with a victory over Austin Peay (80-71) on Wednesday night. The Colonels trailed by as much as 13 in the contest before posting a valiant comeback down the stretch to pull out the nine-point home victory.
The Colonels are led by OVC Preseason Player of the Year Jalen O’Bannon who leads the team with 13.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. O’Bannon scored a game-high 23 points in the win over Austin Peay while her four double-doubles on the season rank as a team high. She is supported by Alexus Cooper (12.6 ppg) and Shavontae Naylor (11.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg) in double figures.
Saturday’s matchup marks the 52nd meeting between the two programs in series history with Eastern Kentucky holding a 31-20 advantage. Despite the lopsided series record, UT Martin has held its own as of late, winning 10 of its last 11 contests against EKU, with the team’s lone setback coming in the OVC opener last season with a 70-61 road loss on Jan. 7, 2016.
