MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team wraps up a three-game road swing when it travels across the state to take on Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Tipoff from the Hooper Eblen Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (15-9, 5-4 OVC) have won two straight meetings against Tennessee Tech, including a 96-90 home victory last season. In that game, the Golden Eagles shot 85.7 percent (18-of-21) in the first half but UT Martin was able to claim the win after connecting on a school-record 16 three-pointers. Jacolby Mobley had 20 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead five Skyhawks in double-figures scoring.
UT Martin has been led lately by the senior tandem of Mobley and Javier Martinez. Mobley was crowned adidas OVC Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 31.0 points per outing in road games at Austin Peay and Murray State. He has led the team in scoring in five straight contests while pouring in a league-best 22.6 points per game against conference foes. Meanwhile, Martinez is coming off a week where he averaged 17.0 points, 14.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, shooting 75 percent (15-for-20) from the floor.
Tennessee Tech (9-15, 5-4 OVC) split a pair of home games last weekend, defeating Morehead State by a 76-73 margin on Thursday before falling 79-66 to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. The Golden Eagles rank atop the OVC in blocked shots (4.0 per game) while also leading the league in three-point field goal percentage defense (.302) in conference games only.
Aleksa Jugovic - who scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting during last year’s game at the Elam Center - has averaged 21.5 points over the last four games. He enters this game having sank 93 percent (40-for-43) of his free throw attempts in conference play.
