The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will head across state lines to take on Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State on Saturday, Jan. 28. Tipoff from the CFSB Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. as part of the front end of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s basketball team.
The Skyhawks (5-16, 2-6 OVC) come into the contest fresh of their first victory of the 2017 year after snapping a sizable six-game losing streak with yet another nail-biting finish in an 83-80 win over Austin Peay on Wednesday evening. In the contest the Skyhawks saw their fifth out of the last six games be decided by five points or fewer while snapping a streak of overtime contest.
A player looking to stay hot is junior forward Ashton Feldhaus who brings versatility throughout the lineup while averaging 20 points per game over the last four contests. After being named OVC Newcomer of the Week just a few days ago, Feldhaus verified that designation by posting a career-high 23 points while tying her previous career-best with nine rebounds in the victory. Meanwhile Myah Taylor also scored 23 points – marking the first time this season that two players eclipsed the 20-point plateau in the same game for the Skyhawks. The duo of Kendall Spray (14 points) and Emanye Robertson (12 points) also scored in double figures.
The game’s matchup pits two of the of the league’s veteran coaches in UT Martin Kevin McMillan and Murray State’s Rob Cross. McMillan recently moved into sole possession of fifth play on the OVC all-time wins list with 147 in his eight seasons at the helm of the Skyhawks. Cross is currently in his ninth season leading the Racers, posting a 117-141 overall mark which ranks 10th on the OVC’s leaderboard.
Murray State (12-8, 4-3 OVC) enters the contest looking to snap a brief two-game losing streak while opening a stretch of four of its next five games being played at home. The Racers boast two of the league’s most dynamic scorers in Ke’Shunan James and LeAsia Wright. The pair ranks first and fourth respectively in the league in scoring, averaging 19.7 points and 15.9 points per game while combining for 18 20-poing games this season.
Saturday’s game marks the 82nd meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 47-34 series advantage. The Skyhawks have won seven of their last eight matchups against the Racers, with the team’s only loss during the stretch coming in the first round of the OVC Tournament last season, 78-76 in a No. 1 vs. No. 8 seed matchup. UT Martin’s last loss in Murray came on Jan. 4, 2010.
