SKYHAWK MEN'S HOOPS TRIES FOR HOMESTAND SWEEP ON SATURDAY AGAINST OVC FOE SIUE
January 20, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball looks to put the finishing touches on an unblemished three-game homestand when it hosts Ohio Valley Conference rival SIUE at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff on Saturday, Jan. 21 is set for approximately 6 p.m., following the Skyhawk women’s basketball game which is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
The Skyhawks (13-8, 3-3 OVC) enter the contest boasting the most overall victories and home wins (nine) in the OVC. A win against the Cougars would result in double-digit home victories in a single season for just the fifth time in UT Martin’s Division-I era (since 1992).
On Thursday, the Skyhawks withstood double overtime before emerging victorious against Eastern Illinois. Jacolby Mobley piled up a career-best 28 points while Javier Martinez accumulated his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds for UT Martin, who also received double-digit scoring efforts out of Kedar Edwards (16 points) and Matthew Butler (15 points) in the 82-71 win.
The Skyhawks swept SIUE last season, winning by an average of 17.0 points per game. UT Martin has won three of its last four home games against the Cougars dating back to 2013.
SIUE (5-15, 0-6 OVC) enters the contest on a six-game losing skid but leads the nation in free throw attempts (534) and also ranks atop the OVC in three-point field goal percentage defense (.309). The Cougar defense has limited the opposition to 24.3 percent shooting from beyond the three-point arc in conference play.
Kansas State transfer Tre Harris comes off the bench to lead SIUE in scoring, including a career-high 25 points (with seven 3-pointers) to go along with eight rebounds in a 79-76 setback at Southeast Missouri on Thursday. In that game, the Cougars held a 34-31 halftime advantage but allowed 61.5 percent (16-of-26) shooting over the final 20 minutes.
