EARLY HOME GAMES AND A CHALLENGING NON-CONFERENCE SLATE HIGHLIGHT 2017 SCHEDULE
January 4, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin is set to square off with four new opponents including 26 home games, as third-year head coach Rick Robinson announces the 2017 baseball schedule.
The Skyhawks will take on Buffalo out of the Mid-American Conference in a three game set at Skyhawk Field (Feb. 17-19) to open the season. This year marks the first time since 2010 that UT Martin opens its season at home. The Skyhawks then host Arkansas Pine-Bluff (Feb. 24-26), where the two programs are scheduled to meet for the first time.
After taking on familiar foe Alabama A&M in a mid-week contest (March 1), the Skyhawks travel to Greenville, SC to take part in the First Pitch Invitational at historic Fluor Field and Latham Stadium. UT Martin will face off with three programs for the first time in school history in Furman (March 3), Presbyterian (March 4) and Michigan State (March 5).
“I think this year’s schedule, with the first 10 of 14 games at home, gives us a strong chance at getting off to a great start,” Robinson said. “We also host three of last year’s top five OVC programs at Skyhawk Field which should also play in our favor.”
Following its trip to Greenville, SC, UT Martin returns home to host Bethel (March 7), where they hold an all-time advantage of 47-7 against the Wildcats.
The Skyhawks will begin Ohio Valley Conference play March 10-12 when they welcome Tennessee Tech to Skyhawk Field. UT Martin then travels to Music City foe Lipscomb (March 15) for a mid-week showdown with the Bisons.
On March 17-19, UT Martin will head to Cape Girardeau, Mo. for its first conference road trip of the season against defending OVC champion Southeast Missouri. The Skyhawks then travel to Evansville in the first of two meetings (March 22, April 18) with the Purple Aces on the season. UT Martin returns home for a weekend series with Belmont on March 24-26 before heading back on the road to meet Eastern Kentucky on March 31-April 2.
The Skyhawks then head back to Nashville to take on traditional Southeastern Conference powerhouse Vanderbilt (April 4) where UT Martin will face the Commodores for the eighth consecutive season.
Skyhawk Field will be the site of the next OVC matchup, as UT Martin welcomes Morehead State on April 7-9. The Skyhawks will then meet up with their second SEC opponent in eight days as they travel to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Kentucky Wildcats.
UT Martin will look to improve on its 3-0 all-time record against Wright State out of the Horizon League on April 14-16 as the Skyhawks travel to Dayton, Ohio to square off with the Raiders in non-conference action. The Skyhawks return to conference play on April 21-23 with a trip to SIU Edwardsville.
Two in-state opponents follow as UT Martin travels to Jackson to take on Union in the first of two meetings on April 25. The Skyhawks host Christian Brothers the following day (April 26) to begin a five-game homestand looking to build on their 20-6 record all-time against the Buccaneers. The Skyhawks then host Austin Peay on April 28-30 before closing out the stretch of home games with matchups against Union (May 2) and Alabama A&M (May 3).
The Skyhawks make their way to Charleston, Ill. on May 5-7 looking to continue their recent success against the Panthers, as UT Martin took two out of three games last season against their conference rival. The Skyhawks follow that series with a one-day road trip to Memphis where UT Martin renews its annual rivalry with the Tigers on May 9.
UT Martin will host their final conference series of the year on May 12-14 when they host Jacksonville State before traveling to rival Murray State on May 18-20. The Skyhawks will be looking to qualify for this year’s OVC Tournament which will be held on May 24-27 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala.
