The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to cap off 2016 on a high note while building upon its Ohio Valley Conference opener when playing host to Morehead State on Saturday, Dec. 31. Tipoff from the Elam Center for the New Years Eve contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. and serves as the frontend of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s basketball team. Saturday also marks Dollar Night with general admission tickets and select concession items each costing just $1.

The Skyhawks (4-10, 1-0 OVC) opened up its title defense as the league’s three-time defending champion by extending the nation’s fourth longest conference home winning streak to 27 games with a 94-83 victory over Jacksonville State on Thursday evening. The squad snapped a three-game losing streak behind a total team performance on both ends of the court. The Skyhawks benefitted from the team’s pressure defense which forced Jacksonville State into 24 turnovers – resulting in 29 points off said turnovers - en route a season-high 94 points.

UT Martin placed six players in double figures for the first time this season with sophomore Myah Taylor leading the squad with 23 points – including six three-pointers. Fellow classmate Emanye Robertson also posted a strong evening, flirting with a triple-double by posting 16 points while notching career highs in rebounds (eight), assists (eight) and steals (five). The quartet of Janekia Mason (14), Ashton Feldhaus (13), Kendall Spray (11) and Ansley Eubank (11) also scored in double figures.

The game’s coaching battle will pit UT Martin’s Kevin McMillan against Morehead State’s Greg Todd. McMillan enters the contests currently tied for fifth place on the OVC’s all-time wins leaderboard along with Tennessee State’s Teresa Phillips with 146 career victories. Todd is currently in his third season leading the Eagles, boasting a 33-41 overall record.

Morehead State (11-3, 1-0 OVC) enters the contest as one on of the OVC’s most improved programs from a year ago after finishing league play with a 4-12 mark. The Eagles have won six-straight contests – including an 81-71 road victory at Austin Peay to open conference play on Thursday evening leading into Saturday’s matchup. The squad boasts three players who average double figures – led by the play of Darianne Seward with 12.0 points per game. Eriel McKee (11.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Brianna McQueen (11.4 ppg, 4.2 apg) also expect to be major contributors.

Saturday’s matchup marks the 47th meeting between the two programs in series history with Morehead State holding a narrow 24-22 advantage. As of late, UT Martin has controlled the series – entering the contest riding a seven-game winning streak against Morehead State dating back to 2011. The Eagles last picked up a victory in the Elam Center on Dec. 3, 2009.
