SKYHAWK MEN'S BASKETBALL HOSTS MOREHEAD STATE FOR DOLLAR NIGHT ON NEW YEAR'S EVE
December 30, 2016
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball squad goes for its first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season when it hosts Morehead State in a New Year’s Eve showdown at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff on Saturday, Dec. 31 is set for approximately 6 p.m., following the Skyhawk women’s basketball game as part of a "Dollar Night" doubleheader. General admission tickets and select concession items will be on sale for just $1.
These two teams have split the last four meetings, including a pair of matchups in the OVC Tournament. Last season, the Skyhawks fell by a 64-58 margin in the regular season tilt at Morehead before claiming an 83-70 win in the OVC Tournament semifinals in Nashville, aided by a game-high 22 points out of Jacolby Mobley.
Crashing the boards will likely be a key to this matchup, as UT Martin ranks fourth nationally in total rebounds (625) while Morehead State leads the OVC in rebounds per game (39.6), rebounding margin (+6.2) and offensive rebounding (14.8 per game).
UT Martin (10-6, 0-1 OVC) will look to bounce back after a tough 90-72 home loss to Jacksonville State in its OVC opener on Thursday. Javier Martinez compiled 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to lead four double-digit scorers for the Skyhawks, who knocked down 10 three-pointers but only shot 26.9 percent (7-for-26) in the second half.
Morehead State (4-9, 0-0 OVC) is coming off a 120-77 dismantling of NAIA opponent Asbury on Wednesday. Treshaad Williams scored a game-high 24 points in only 19 minutes to guide six double-digit scorers for the Eagles, who are the top scoring team in the OVC at 82.4 points per game.
Xavier Moon is the reigning OVC Player of the Week after recording the first triple-double in school history (25 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds) against Central Arkansas. Jordan Walker also earned OVC Freshman of the Week accolades after averaging 12.5 points in games against Central Arkansas and Mississippi State.
