The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will cap off its three-game road swing to complete non-conference play with a short trek across the Chicago area for a matchup against Big Ten foe Northwestern on Thursday, Dec. 22. Tipoff from Welsh-Ryan Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks (3-9) enter the contest looking to snap a four-game road losing streak after falling to No. 22 ranked DePaul on Tuesday night by a score of 100-68. The visitors struggled to get much going on the offensive side of the ball in the first half resulting in a 33 points halftime deficit which proved too much to overcome despite narrowly outscoring the Blue Devils in the second half of play.
UT Martin is led in scoring by sophomore Myah Taylor who averages 11.8 points per game while Emanye Robertson trails close behind at 10.9 ppg. Another player to watch is the play of freshman sharpshooter Kendall Spray who has averaged 16 points per game on the road trip with 15 points at Missouri before tying a career-high with 17 points at DePaul.
Thursday’s matchup boasts a meeting between two veteran head coaches in UT Martin’s Kevin McMillan and Northwestern’s Joe McKeown. McMillan boasts a 145-92 overall record in his eighth season leading the Skyhawks. McKeown – who is currently in his 31st year overall – has led the Wildcats to a 129-127 record in ninth seasons at the school.
Northwestern (10-2) enters the contest as one of the hottest teams in the nation with its only losses coming to then No. 20 DePaul and Gonzaga – both of which were on the road. The Wildcats – who are receiving votes in both national polls – have posted a perfect 8-0 record in the comforts of Welsh-Ryan Arena while outscoring opponents by an average of 12 points per game.
The Wildcats are led by explosive senior forward Nia Coffey who averages a dominating double-double with 20.7 points and 12.2 rebounds per game while leading the squad with 19 blocks on the year. Christen Inman (13.2 ppg) and Ashley Deary (11.8 ppg and 6.4 apg) round out the top players for the Wildcats.
Thursday’s meeting will serve as just the second meeting between the two programs with Northwestern coming out victorious 79-69 on Nov. 9, 2012.
