MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will look to wrap up its nonconference schedule on a high note when it squares off against the Southern Illinois Salukis out of the Missouri Valley Conference on Thursday, Dec. 22. Tipoff time from SIU Arena is set for 7 p.m.
Although the two teams are separated by just 110 miles, this matchup will be only the third time that the Skyhawks and Southern Illinois have met on the hardwood. UT Martin has previously visited SIU Arena in 1999 and 2009.
The Skyhawks (10-4) continued their impressive nonconference slate on Tuesday at UMKC, coming away with a 77-66 road victory. In that game, UT Martin snared 59 rebounds (the most in the school’s Division-I history) and limited the host Kangaroos to just 31.3 percent shooting for the contest. Kedar Edwards compiled 18 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists while Malik London (16 points) and Kahari Beaufort (11 points) each contributed career-high scoring efforts off the bench.
Tuesday night’s victory at UMKC was the 24th road win for UT Martin since the start of the 2014-15 season, which is the second-highest total in Division-I basketball behind only Monmouth (27).
UT Martin’s 10 wins rank first in the Ohio Valley Conference, as the Skyhawks have won double-digit nonconference games for the first time since 1986-87. First-year head coach Anthony Stewart, who served as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois in 2011-12, is the fastest coach in program history to reach his first 10 wins.
Southern Illinois (6-6) has already faced two OVC teams this season, winning 101-83 at SIUE on Nov. 18 before outlasting Murray State by an 89-85 margin in overtime on Nov. 29.
The Salukis are coming off a 68-61 setback at UNLV on Monday. Mike Rodriguez - who ranks seventh nationally with 94 free throw attempts - and Armon Fletcher each poured in 15 points to lead Southern Illinois, who forced 23 turnovers.
