Arkansas State Game Notes
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to get back to its winning ways by returning to the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center for a matchup with regional-rival Arkansas State on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and serves as the program’s annual Character Counts game for local schools as the front end of a split doubleheader with the men’s team playing at 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (2-7) enter the contest looking to protect their home court after struggling on the road. In the most recent contest, the Skyhawks traveled to the Sooner State where they took on Oral Roberts on Saturday. UT Martin struggled to score from the field, shooting just 36.5 percent from the field before ultimately dropping the contest 82-53. Returning to the Elam Center for the team’s final non-conference home game, the Skyhawks will look to preserve a streak which dates back to the 2012-13 season since the squad dropped consecutive home games – a streak of 43 games.
UT Martin boasts four players who average in double figures, led by sophomore Myah Taylor who averages 10.7 points per game. Freshman Kendall Spray (10.3 ppg), sophomore Emanye Robertson (10.3 ppg) and junior Ashton Feldhaus (10.1 ppg) also lead a balanced scoring attack.
The Skyhawks are coached by Kevin McMillan who boasts a 144-90 overall record in his eighth season. Overall UT Martin holds a 72-17 record in the Elam Center during the McMillan era. Arkansas State is led by Brian Boyer who owns a 300-236 mark in 18years.
Arkansas State (1-7) is looking to get back to its winning way after notching its third Sun Belt championship last season. The Red Wolves also boast a young squad which features seven freshmen – a program record during the Boyer era. The squad has fallen victim to a pair of nationally ranked opponents along with losses to OVC foes Austin Peay (62-55) and Tennessee State (76-66).
The Red Wolves are led in scoring by Dominique Oliver with 10.4 points while tallying 4.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Akasha Westbrook also averages in double figures, tallying 101. Points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
Wednesday’s meeting will mark the 12th meeting between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a narrow 6-5 advantage. The Skyhawks are 4-1 against Arkansas State all-time in the Elam Center with the Red Wolves’ lone victory coming last season with a 76-74 win on Nov. 18, 2015.
