MARTIN, Tenn. –
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team fell behind early and would not recover, falling to in-state rival Chattanooga 80-60 on Saturday night.

The Skyhawks (2-6) struggled offensively, shooting just 35.9 percent from the floor while the Mocs shot nearly 20 percent better from the field - knocking down 10 three-pointers. UT Martin placed a pair of scorers in double figures led by Kendall Spray who tallied 16 points while Myah Taylor tossed in 12 points of her own.  

Chattanooga (4-6) snapped a four-game losing streak after placing four players in double figures. The Mocs saw the trio of Lakelyn Bouldin, Keiana Gilbert and Jasmine Joyner nearly notch double-doubles. Bouldin led the squad with 18 points and eight rebounds while Gilbert tallied 17 points and nine rebounds. Chelsey Shumpert tallied 16 points and five assists while Jasmine Joyner notched 10 points, nine rebounds and six blocks.

The Mocs would look to break the game open early in the first quarter. After the game got started slowly by both teams combining for just nine points in the opening five minutes, the visitors would look for separation. Chattanooga would finish the first quarter on a 16-2 run behind seven points from Gilbert and six from Bouldin to give the squad a 19-5 lead heading into the second.

UT Martin would narrowly win the second quarter by outscoring Chattanooga 19-18 in the period. The Mocs would push their advantage out to as high as 19 points during the quarter following a pair of free throws by Shumpert. The Skyhawks would whittle the deficit down to 13 in the following a jumper by Emanye Robertson just before the break. Despite winning the quarter, UT Martin would head into the halftime break trailing 37-24.

Chattanooga used the third quarter to pad its lead once again, placing a pair of players in double figures during period. The Mocs would knock down four three-pointers in the period to push the margin back out to 19 points – led by eight points from Bouldin. With the strong play, the Mocs would take a 57-38 lead into the fourth.

Both teams would combined for 45 points in the fourth period with Chattanooga narrowly outscoring UT Martin 23-22. UT Martin would trim the margin to as close as 15 points in the fourth but that would be as close as the Skyhawks would get before falling to the Mocs 80-60

UT Martin will turn its focus to academics over the ensuing days with final taking place over the next week before returning to action at Oral Roberts on Saturday, Dec. 10. Tipoff from The Mabee Center is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
