MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad returns to the road for its first-ever matchup against the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The game is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1.
The Skyhawks are off to one of the best starts in their Division-I history, as they are 6-2 to begin a season for only the fourth time since 1992. UT Martin's six victories are tied with Tennessee State for the most in the Ohio Valley Conference during the nonconference portion of the schedule.
UT Martin has proven to be one of the best road teams in the country since the start of the 2014-15 season, as its 22 road victories trail only Monmouth (24) and Albany (23) for the most in the Division-I ranks.
On Tuesday, UT Martin came away with an exciting 82-81 home win over Conference USA member Florida Atlantic. The Skyhawks shot a sizzling 60 percent in the second half to erase an 11-point deficit with 9:59 remaining, capped off by a Kedar Edwards pull-up three-pointer with 1.3 seconds to go that iced the victory. UT Martin received a big lift out of their bench during the game, as Fatodd Lewis (career-best 19 points) and Malik Pugh (season-high 12 points in 16 minutes) each helped carry the Skyhawks to their 10th straight win at home.
Despite its 1-5 record, Arkansas-Pine Bluff has proven to be one of the nation's best defensive teams. The Golden Lions rank first out of 347 Division-I squads in three-point field goal percentage defense (.182) and also are sixth in the nation in turnovers forced (19.33 per outing).
Arkansas-Pine Bluff is coming off a 64-44 loss at Hawaii on Sunday. Ghiavonni Robinson knocked down a trio of three-pointers on his way to a team-high 12 points, leading the Golden Lions in scoring for the fourth time in six games this season.
