The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will plays its second game of a three-game homestand when playing host to regional rival and Missouri Valley Conference foe Southern Illinois on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the frontend of a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team.
The Skyhawks (1-5) look to snap a three-game losing streak against the Salukis after nearly knocking off Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon. In a game which featured 11 lead changes, the Skyhawks not only had a chance to win the game in the final seconds but missed the potential game-tying layup at the buzzer to fall 79-77. After dropping the contest, UT Martin is looking to refrain from dropping consecutive games at the Elam Center since the 2012-13 season – a streak of 41 games.
Highlighting the strong performance by the Skyhawks was sophomore point guard Emanye Robertson who exploded for a career-best 23 points while dishing six assists and tallying three steals. Robertson has been effective as of late, scoring 15 points or more in three of the last four contests. Joining in the action was the play of junior Ashton Feldhaus who posted a strong week of performances by averaging 14 points and seven rebounds per game against Samford and Vanderbilt.
The Skyhawks are coached by Kevin McMillan who is currently in his eighth season with a 143-88 record. McMillan - the two-time reigning Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year - ranks seventh on the OVC’s all-time wins leaderboard. Southern Illinois is coached by Cindy Stein who holds a 45-53 record in four seasons at the school.
Southern Illinois (3-2) enters the contest looking to build upon its strong play as of late, winning four of its last five games. The Salukis most recently defeated NAIA foe Brescia 104-35 while picking up a road victory at Purdue (64-61) early last week. The squad is led by Kylie Giebelhausen with 14.4 points per game while Kim Nebo chips in 11.8 points per night.
Tuesday’s game will serve as the 18th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a narrow 9-8 advantage. The Skyhawks have held control of the series recently, winning four of the last five matchups, including a 70-63 road victory on Nov. 25, 2015. The Salukis lone series win during the Kevin McMillan era came in the Elam Center on Nov. 14, 2014 by an 87-78 advantage.
