MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team looks to keep rolling when it visits the Duquesne Dukes on Wednesday, Nov. 23 in its third game of the Bluegrass Showcase multi-team event. Tipoff from the AJ Palumbo Center will take place at 6 p.m. CST.
The Skyhawks are off to their hottest start in over a decade, as their 4-1 mark under first-year head coach Anthony Stewart is the best for the program since the 2005-06 campaign. Winners of four straight games, UT Martin leads the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring (84.6 points per game) and ranks 10th nationally in assists (20.8 per game).
UT Martin is coming off a gutsy 72-69 road win at Canisius on Monday. In that game, the Skyhawks trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half before charging back to lead by double-figures with 7:20 remaining. UT Martin then thwarted a potential Canisius comeback after a defensive stand with nine seconds remaining sealed the victory.
The Skyhawks have been led lately by the senior trio of Jacolby Mobley, Kedar Edwards and Javier Martinez. Mobley tosses in a team-high 17.4 points per outing and ranks ninth nationally with 18 three-pointers. Edwards is the only player in the OVC to rank in the top-12 in scoring (16.8 points per game, sixth), rebounding (6.8 per game, 11th), assists (6.0 per game, third) and blocks (0.8 per game, 12th). Martinez is UT Martin’s leading rebounder (8.2 per game) and has led the team in scoring in each of the last two games, averaging 20.0 points per game on 80 percent shooting (16-of-20) in that span.
Duquesne, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, fell to 2-3 on the season after a 93-59 setback at current No. 1 Kentucky on Sunday. Emile Blackman was responsible for a team-high 13 points while Tarin Smith (10 points) and Isiaha Mike (game-high 10 rebounds) also led the Dukes, who knocked down 90.9 percent (20-for-22) of their free throw attempts in the game.
