The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to pick up its first win of the new season with a matchup at Southern Conference foe Western Carolina on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Tipoff from the Ramsey Regional Activity Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. CST.
The Skyhawks (0-2) are looking to get in the win column after suffering their second setback of the season on Monday night to North Carolina A&T, 74-59. The Skyhawks led for much of the first half before the team’s 24 turnovers and missed free throws proved to be too much to overcome down the stretch. With little time to relax, the Skyhawks will play their third game in the span of six days.
UT Martin saw junior forward Shy Copney make her season debut after missing the opener with an injury. Copney moved into the starting lineup and tallied a team-high 12 points while notching four rebounds. Freshman Kendall Spray also posted a career-high in the contest, tallying 11 points.
The Skyhawks are coached by Kevin McMillan who is currently in his eighth season with a 142-85 record. McMillan - the two-time reigning Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year - ranks seventh on the OVC’s all-time wins leaderboard. Western Carolina is coached by Stephanie McCormick who is 7-23 in her second season.
Western Carolina (0-1) is also looking for its first win of the season after dropping a 78-63 decision to Clemson on Sunday. In the contest, junior forward Sherae Bonner posted a dominating performance, tallying 23 points and 19 rebounds for a double-double to earn SoCon Player of the Week honors. The trio of JonTay Mitchem, Julia Brown and Raziyah Farrington all hovered around double figures with nine points each.
Wednesday’s game will serve as the first meeting between the two programs in series history.
