March 26, 2016
LAS CRUCES, NM – The No. 4 seed University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team fought hard today but fell by a 12-4 margin to No. 3 seed New Mexico State in the United Equestrian Conference championship held at the New Mexico State Equestrian Center.
The two squads split in equitation on the flat, as Nora Wilson (132 points) and Claire Ottinger (120) each won their head-to-head matchups for the Skyhawks. Wilson’s score of 162 also earned a team point for UT Martin in equitation over fences but the Aggies claimed the remaining three points in the event.
In the Western discipline, Brittany Woodard nabbed a team point for the Skyhawks in horsemanship by posting a score of 149. However, New Mexico State compiled the remaining seven points (three in horsemanship, four in reining) on its way to the win.
The UEC postseason awards were handed out at the conclusion of the day, as a pair of UT Martin riders earned accolades. Madeline Williams was named to the four-member All-Reining team while Wilson swept Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors in both equitation on the flat and equitation over fences.
