UTM VOLLEYBALL TEAM STARTS 2014 SEASON THIS WEEKEND AT ISTAP COLLEGIATE CUP

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team begins the 2014 campaign this weekend at the ISTAP Collegiate Cup tournament hosted by Alabama State University in Montgomery, Ala.
The Skyhawks will play three matches in two days, starting with a 10 a.m. matchup against South Carolina State on Friday, Aug. 29. UT Martin will then take on host Alabama State at 3 p.m. on Friday before rounding out its tournament participation with a 3 p.m. matchup against Southern on Saturday, Aug. 30.
UT Martin returns nine players and five starters from last season’s squad who went 9-23 overall with a 3-13 Ohio Valley Conference record. Head coach Darrin McClure is entering his seventh season at the helm of the Skyhawk volleyball program.
A member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, South Carolina State is coming off a 6-22 season in 2013. UT Martin holds a 2-0 all-time series lead over the Lady Bulldogs, winning in neutral site matches in 1993 and 2006. Friday’s match will be the first of two against South Carolina State for the Skyhawks, as they will also square off on Sept. 19 at a tournament hosted by Chattanooga.
Alabama State posted a 25-16 overall record with an 8-0 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play last season. The Skyhawks won their only meeting against the Hornets, defeating Alabama State by a 3-0 win in a neutral site match in 2012 at Montgomery.
Southern is coming off a 9-19 season, going 4-4 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 2013. This will be the first-ever meeting between UT Martin and Southern.
This will be the first of four tournaments that the Skyhawks will take part in over the season’s first four weekends. UT Martin will also travel to tournaments at Memphis and Chattanooga while hosting the Skyhawk Invitational on Sept. 12-13.
