MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell behind early and could not muster enough offense to keep pace in an 11-0 loss at Memphis this evening.
Freshman outfielder Chase Young continued his offensive surge tonight – tallying two hits for his third straight multi-hit performance and 10th multi-hit effort of the season. Nick Molina reached base three times (double, two walks), Max Balter went 1-for-3 with a walk, Taylor Douglas had a hit and swiped a pair of stolen bases and Nico Zych also recorded a hit to lead UT Martin (9-39) offensively.
Starting pitcher Alex Boshers was hit with the loss this evening, falling to 1-3 on the season after allowing six earned runs in four innings. Chris Flores (two runs in three innings) and Douglas (one unearned run allowed in one inning) made relief appearances for the Skyhawks tonight.
Memphis (27-26) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a Skyhawk error to score a pair of runs. The Tigers then added four runs in the top of the second to take a 6-0 advantage.
Balter and Young pieced together back-to-back singles with one out in the third but UT Martin could not chip away from its deficit.
The Tigers would once again capitalize on a Skyhawk error in the third, expanding their lead out to 8-0.
Molina doubled with one out in the fourth and Zych followed with a single through the left side but UT Martin could not score.
Boshers kept Memphis off the scoreboard in the fourth and it appeared as if the Skyhawks may break through in the top of the fifth after Balter (walk) and Young (single) reached base to lead off the inning. However, both runners were stranded.
Flores retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth. Molina and Drew Erie each received a free pass in the sixth but once again the Skyhawks could not generate a run.
Flores got out of a jam in the sixth, coming up with a big pair of strikeouts to end the bottom of the sixth and strand two runners on the basepaths.
In the top of the seventh, Douglas singled through the right side with one away and would later steal both second and third base. Memphis would escape its jam and keep the score at 8-0.
The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the seventh and tacked on an unearned run in the eighth to close out the scoring in the contest.
UT Martin will wrap up the 2014 campaign on May 15-17 at home against Ohio Valley Conference opponent Eastern Illinois. First pitch times are set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16 and 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17 – which will also serve as Senior Day.
