CABALLERO PASSES FIRST TEST TO QUALIFY FOR 2014 US OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
May 9, 2014
MARTIN, Tenn. – Rising senior golfer Brendon Caballero, from the University of Tennessee at Martin, advanced to a qualifier for a chance to take part in the 2014 US Open Championship, which will be held on June 12-15 at the famous Pinehurst No. 2 course in Pinehurst, NC.
On Wednesday, Caballero took part in a one-day local qualifier at the famous Colonial Country Club South course in Cordova, Tenn. The field was made up of 80 golfers made up of local amateurs, collegiate players from local and state universities (including several Southeastern Conference players) and professional players. The top five finishers would receive a chance to qualify for the US Open.
Caballero shot a 71 (-1) that placed him in a three-way tie for the fifth and final spot. Caballero would then top Jonathan Fly (a local professional who played at the University of Memphis) and Chad Ramey (former Mississippi State University golfer) with an even-par performance through four holes. With Skyhawk volunteer assistant Scott Carpenter serving as his caddie, Caballero sealed the playoff win with a par putt on the fourth hole, which he had triple-bogeyed in regulation.
A two-time All-OVC recipient out of Brentwood, Tenn., Caballero will now return to Colonial on June 2 for the sectional qualifying event that will include mostly professionals who will also be taking part in the Fed Ex/St. Jude Championship at the TPC Southwind Country Club in Memphis. The qualifier is a 36-hole event (18 on the North course and 18 on the South course) with eight to 10 spots available for the winners to go to the US Open.
“Brendon has been a very good player for the Skyhawks that has worked extremely hard and elevated his game to the next level,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “I feel that this gives him the confidence to play with anyone each time that he tees up the golf ball.”
In addition to his participation at the Colonial in early June, Caballero will also play in the SunTrust Tennessee State Open Championship later this month (where he finished fourth last year) and the State Amateur in August.
So far, four members of the UT Martin golf team have qualified for the aforementioned State Open. Carpenter expects two more Skyhawks to qualify next week for the tournament, which will be held at Belle Meade Country Club in Nashville on May 21-23.
