MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team carded the best round out of any Ohio Valley Conference school today at the league championships at the Fighting Joe course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

The Skyhawks shot a final tally of 276, which was 12-under par and four strokes better than the next best score over the first two rounds of play. UT Martin now sits in fourth place at 575 (-1), two shots behind second place and eight shots behind team leader Jacksonville State (567, -9).

“To shoot 12-under par at the OVC championships on this great golf course speaks volumes about our kids,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “They were upset yesterday after shooting 11-over and we knew we could play better. They were determined to play well and that’s exactly what we did. I am so proud of them and we are excited to see what happens tomorrow.”

Leading the charge for the Skyhawks today was senior Clay Harbin, whose 67 (-5) was the best out of 55 golfers who comprised the field. Harbin, who shaved nine strokes off his first round score, now stands in a tie for sixth place in the tournament with teammate Brendon Caballero, who shot a 69 today and now has a two-round total of 143 (-1).

Ben Reeves is UT Martin’s third top-10 golfer in the field after his 73 today puts him at even-par (144) for the tournament. Tyler Shellnut (69 today; 147 overall) and Austin Swafford (71; 151) also trimmed nine strokes off of their first round scores to put the Skyhawks within striking distance on Sunday.

The Skyhawks tee off at 9:40 a.m. tomorrow for the third and final round of the OVC championships.
