MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin head men’s basketball coach Heath Schroyer has announced the signing of Richard Lee out of Northeast High School in Oakland Park, Fla. Lee will be a freshman for the Skyhawks in the 2014-15 season.
“We are really excited about adding Richard to the program,” Schroyer said. “He is one of the top senior combo guards in the country and we are really fortunate to have him. I think he is going to fit in great with every aspect of our program both socially, academically and obviously basketball-wise. I’m looking for great things from Day One from Richard and there is no doubt in my mind he will have a fabulous four-year career here.”
A 6-4, 200-pound combo guard, Lee wrapped up his remarkable prep career in the state of Florida. Ranked as a three-star recruit and 51st best shooting guard prospect in the nation by ESPN, Lee averaged 19 points per game last season at Northeast High School for head coach Darrance Gillion.
In 2012-13, Lee helped Blanche Ely High School win Florida’s Class 7A state title during his junior campaign. He averaged 17 points, four rebounds and three assists per game for a Tigers team that went 27-1 and earned a top-10 national ranking under head coach Melvin Randall. Earning all-tournament honors at the prestigious Chick-fil-A Classic, Lee was named a top-five player in basketball hotbed Broward County while also earning second team all-state and all-county accolades.
Lee spent his first two seasons of high school back at Northeast. He averaged 16 points, six rebounds and four assists per game as a sophomore under head coach Gerald Gillion. As a freshman in 2010-11, he averaged 18 points, four rebounds and five assists per game.
“I chose UT Martin because it was the best situation for me to get better as a player and make a great impact as a freshman,” Lee said. “I look forward to winning games and leading the team to the NCAA Tournament.”
Lee joins Twymond Howard (Pearl, Miss./Southwest Mississippi CC), Alex Anderson (Memphis, Tenn./Itawamba CC), CJ Davis (Cave Creek, Ariz./Westwind Prep Academy), Brandon Hitchman (Stratford, England/Westwind Prep Academy) and Fatodd Lewis (Memphis, Tenn./Raleigh-Egypt HS) in Schroyer’s first signing class at UT Martin.
