SKYHAWK SOFTBALL CANNOT CONTAIN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS OFFENSE BEFORE FALLING 9-0

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team could not overcome two huge innings by Southern Illinois, spotting the Salukis nine runs in the opening two frames of the game, before ultimately falling it its final non-conference game of the season 9-0 in five innings at Charlotte West Stadium.
The Skyhawks (23-24-1) dropped its eighth decision in the last nine games after being held to just five hits on the day. Five players each tallied a hit on the day as Gabby Glenn, Stephanie Nidiffer, Kayla Wade, Deven Wilson and Lauren Smith tallied singles on the day.
Casey Vincent (6-8) was hit with the loss, allowing seven hits and three walks while allowing nine runs, with just four runs being earned. Elizabeth Wiegand appeared in relief, striking out three and allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings of work.
Southern Illinois (25-20) was led by the play of Kelsey Gonzales who was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a three-run home run. Merri Ann Patterson tallied one hit, notching two RBIs on the day. Taylor Orsburn (6-2) notched her first career shutout with a four-hit shutout inside the circle.
The Salukis got on the board in the opening frame of the day. Kalyn Harker got the inning started with a single off the first base bag before Vincent registered two outs in a row. Shaye Harre would draw a two-out walk before Gonzales got the Salukis on the board with a three-run blast over the left field wall, giving SIU the early 3-0.
The Salukis would keep the pressure coming as the ensuing batters reached on an error and walk before a fluke single in no-man’s land fell short of the outstretched arm of Taylor Manning to score Orsborn. Another two runs would score on the next at bat as an infield single by Patterson plated a pair for the Salukis, leading 6-0 after the first.
SIU would stay on the offensive in the second inning, adding another three runs to stretch its margin. Harre and Orsburn would each tally singles with a walk to Gonzales sandwiched in-between, loading the bases for the Salukis with one out. The Salukis would tally two runs on the ensuing play, as Meredith Wilson reached on a fielder’s choice while an error on a potential force out allowed the pair of runs to score. SIU would tally its final run of the inning on an RBI groundout by Kelsea Ashton, giving the home squad the 9-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Skyhawks would look to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning as Wade reached on an infield hit before scrambling to second on an error on the play. Smith would snap a seven-game hitless streak with a single up the middle to put the Skyhawks on first and third with no outs. The Saluki starter would shut the door however, picking up three consecutive outs to preserve the shutout.
UT Martin will look to bounce back this weekend when playing host to Southeast Missouri for the final home series of the season. The three-game series is scheduled to get underway with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities scheduled for Sunday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
