MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team led for the first six innings during this afternoon’s game at Morehead State but the Eagles accounted for 11 runs over their final two frames to claim a 14-6 win at Allen Field.
Junior centerfielder Taylor Douglas continued his hot streak at the dish this afternoon, slugging a pair of homers during a 3-for-4, three-run, three-RBI performance. Ben Upton also went yard with three RBI’s while Taylor Cox went 2-for-3 with a run scored for UT Martin (4-32, 3-17 Ohio Valley Conference).
Dalton Potts pitched well today but received a no-decision. The junior out of Greenfield, Tenn. conceded just one earned run over five innings – firing 70 of his 103 pitches for strikes. Carter Smith (1-2, five runs in one inning) and Stu Jones (six runs in two innings) also made appearances on the mound for the Skyhawks.
Douglas gave UT Martin an early lead after he ripped the second pitch he saw in the top of the first for a home run to straightaway center.
Potts pitched around a pair of walks in the bottom of the first and a leadoff double in the bottom of the second to keep Morehead State off the scoreboard.
The Skyhawks then extended their advantage out to 5-0 in the top of the third. Max Balter led off the frame with a single through the left side and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Young. Douglas then showed a good piece of hitting by driving a 1-0 pitch the opposite way for a single that scored Balter. Cox then walked to put a pair of baserunners aboard. Upton then jumped on the first pitch he saw, launching a three-run jack down the right field line for his third round tripper of the season.
Morehead State scored once in the third but Potts retired the side in order in the fourth and got two quick outs on five pitches in the fifth. However, the Eagles took advantage of a pair of UT Martin errors in the latter part of the fifth to score a pair of runs and make the score 5-3.
Smith then entered the game in the sixth and conceded only a two-out single before keeping the Skyhawk lead at two runs through six complete innings.
However, Morehead State opened the seventh inning with six consecutive hits and would take an 8-5 lead.
Douglas did his best to keep UT Martin in the game, as he roped his second homer of the contest (third of the season) on the first pitch he saw in the eighth.
Ultimately, Morehead State would add six more runs in the bottom of the eighth and the Skyhawks could not get a baserunner aboard in the top of the ninth.
The series finale is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 at 11 a.m. CT.
