MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team stayed close throughout but one big inning by Morehead State led to a 6-3 Eagle win at Allen Field today.
Ben Upton and Nick Molina each had two hits today for UT Martin (4-31, 3-16 Ohio Valley Conference), with Upton driving in a pair of runs. Nico Zych also collected an RBI while Chase Young, Taylor Douglas and Jake Deason accounted for the Skyhawks’ runs scored today.
Starting pitcher Taylor Cox pitched well this afternoon but fell to 0-9 on the season after allowing four earned runs over five innings. John Houston came in and kept the Skyhawks in the game by allowing just one unearned run over three frames.
Cox did not allow a hit through the first five Eagle batters before Morehead State scored on a fielder’s choice to take a 1-0 lead through two frames.
Drew Erie would walk and steal second base in the third inning but the Skyhawks could not bring him around to score.
Morehead State tallied another run on a bases loaded double play groundout in the third. The Skyhawks would come back with a pair of big hits in the top of the fourth to get on the scoreboard. Douglas led off with a double to center and three batters later, Upton rifled a triple down the right field line to plate Douglas and make the score 2-1.
Cox responded with a dominant shutdown inning in the bottom of the fourth, needing only eight pitches to retire the side in order.
Molina singled up the middle to lead off the fifth and would later swipe second base but UT Martin would not tie the game.
Cox then did a great job pitching around trouble in the fifth to keep the margin at 2-1, as he would strand an Eagle who hit a leadoff double.
Morehead State then pieced together four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go on top by a 6-1 margin.
Houston kept the Eagles off the scoreboard in the seventh, recording his first out on a heads up defensive play where he threw out the lead runner trying to advance to third base. Five pitches later, he induced a double play to swing momentum back in UT Martin’s favor.
The Skyhawks then tallied a pair of runs in the eighth to make the score 6-3. Deason led off the frame with a single and Young followed with a walk. Phil Sorensen then walked on seven pitches to load the bases and Zych followed with a sacrifice fly. Upton then delivered a one-out single to left field that plated Young.
Houston shut down Morehead State in the bottom of the eighth but the Skyhawks could not get a baserunner aboard in the top of the ninth.
Game 2 of this series is set for Friday, April 18 at 4 p.m. CT.
