EQUESTRIAN TEAM READY FOR NCEA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LONE STAR STATE
April 16, 2014
WACO, Texas – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team is set to make its eighth consecutive postseason appearance when it takes on Baylor in the opening round of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association championships on Thursday, April 17 at the Extraco Events Center.
UT Martin takes on No. 6 Baylor tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. to open the championship. If the Skyhawks were to advance, they would be paired against No. 3 Georgia on Friday. The NCEA quarterfinals and championship are then set for Saturday.
Seeded No. 11 in the tournament, the Skyhawks went 5-7-3 against one of the toughest schedules in the nation. In fact, nine of UT Martin’s 15 competitions have been against a team in this year’s NCEA field – including matchups against each of the top seven seeds.
The Skyhawks faced Baylor on Sept. 28 in the same facility the NCEA championships are being held, with Baylor claiming an 11-5 win. Hunter Ralston and Reid Rickett earned points for UT Martin in equitation, with Rickett garnering MOP honors. Ralston also registered a point for the Skyhawks in equitation on the flat while Cora Rogalski and Kenzie Perry each notched a point in horsemanship.
UT Martin also squared off against its potential quarterfinals opponent in Georgia. The Skyhawks played Georgia to a 9-9 draw on Jan. 25 in Martin, with the Bulldogs escaping with a tiebreaker win. Rickett (MOP), Ralston and Kaylan Herbst tallied a point apiece in equitation while Rickett, Ralston and Caitlyn Epperson tallied points in equitation over fences. Rogalski and Laurel Ellzey notched points in horsemanship while Sam Knight (MOP) and Megan Marie Foley chalked up points in reining.
