HERMITAGE, Tenn. – It was a good day all around at the conclusion of the third and final round of the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate this afternoon, as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team captured its second win of the season while Brendon Caballero topped the field of 83 golfers.
The Skyhawks, who also won at the Wasioto Winds Fall Invitational back in early September, finished off the task at hand today after leading through each of the first two rounds yesterday. UT Martin’s round of 304 resulted in a total of 870 (+6) for the tournament, which topped the 14-team field and was five strokes better than second-place Southern Illinois.
Caballero, who also led after Round 1 and Round 2 yesterday, sealed the victory with a 74 (+2) this morning, bringing his three-round score to 210 (-6). After the junior from Brentwood, Tenn. held a narrow two-stroke advantage going into the day’s action, he ran away with the individual title, winning the tournament by five shots.
Tyler Shellnut carded the best round of any UT Martin golfer today, shooting a 73 to earn him a tie for fifth place in the tournament (217, +1). Ben Reeves shot a 78 today to end his tournament with a 222 overall (+6), followed by Clay Harbin (79 today; 225 total, +9) and Austin Swafford (80; 228, +12).
Tyler Guy competed as an individual, shooting an 81 today to bring his three-round total to 229 (+13).
UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter was proud of his team’s play this morning during subpar weather conditions.
“The wind chill was at 22 degrees this morning and we had rain, sleet and 15-20 mile per hour winds,” Carpenter said. “It was tough but I just told our guys to survive and grind it out. I told them this morning that if they could go out and just beat their paired partner by one stroke, we would win this tournament and that’s exactly what we did. We played hard and I was really pleased with everybody’s efforts. This was a great way to wrap up the regular season.”
The Skyhawks will look to carry their momentum into next weekend’s Ohio Valley Conference championships, which will be played at the Fighting Joe course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Practice rounds are set for Thursday, April 24 before first round action on Friday, April 25. The second round will follow on Saturday, April 26 while the third and final round will occur on Sunday, April 27. Tee times for all three days are set for 8 a.m.
