HERMITAGE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team played two of its best rounds of the season today and as a result, the Skyhawks lead the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate after 36 holes on the President's Reserve Course at the Hermitage Golf Club.
UT Martin led after Round 1 (285, -3) this morning and padded their lead in the second round with a score of 281 (-7). Overall, the Skyhawks carded a two-round total of 566 (-10) to lead the 12 team field. UT Martin is two strokes ahead of second-place Southern Illinois.
“We played off green grass fairways today for the first time all year – the course is in really good shape,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “With that said, it was extremely windy and we battled rain so club selection was a premium. We had a bunch of birdies to cover up a few bogeys. We really struck the ball well from tee to green and putted and chipped as well as we have all year long. I am extremely proud of our team’s effort today.”
Junior Brendon Caballero played a near flawless pair of rounds today, ranking first out of 83 golfers with rounds of 69 and 67. His two-round total of 136 (-8) is two shots better than Missouri State’s Mitch Mather and Southern Illinois’ Caleb Harms, who are tied for second place.
Tyler Shellnut (71, 73) and Ben Reeves (73, 71) are each tied for 10th place with scores of 144 (E). Clay Harbin (146, +2) produced rounds of 72 and 74 while Austin Swafford (148, +4) concluded the team scoring with rounds of 78 and 70.
Competing as an individual, Tyler Guy compiled a final score of 148 (76, 72; +4).
The Skyhawks and Caballero will look to clinch tournament titles when the third and final round gets underway on Tuesday, April 15 at 8 a.m.
