MARTIN, Tenn. – Despite severe weather hitting the area last Wednesday suspending play against Belmont, the Skyhawks picked up where they left off as they coasted to a 5-1 Ohio Valley Conference victory at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex this afternoon.

The Skyhawks (7-9, 4-4 OVC) picked up a pair of victories last week before weather caused the match to be suspended as senior Ivon Simic picked up a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 1 singles play. Sarah Candeloro joined Simic in the winner’s circle with another key win, posting a 6-0, 6-1 match victory.

Freshmen Hitomi Naito and Burcu Tari both continued matches from last week, each moving to 12-3 on the season following their respective 6-3, 6-2 and 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victories. Jessica Silva picked up the Skyhawks fifth and final victory of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 5.

With the match already decided, doubles play was cancelled.

“Hitomi finished off her match quickly and Jessica was not far behind,” said UT Martin coach Dennis Taylor. “That gave us the match. Burcu, starting a set down from last week, quickly got out ahead and never looked back.”

UT Martin will return to action this weekend with a pair of OVC matches to close out the regular season. The Skyhawks will partake in Senior Day activities on Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. before taking on Austin Peay. The Skyhawks will host Murray State on Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. to cap off the regular season.
