SKYHAWK SOFTBALL TAKES CLEAN SWEEP OF EVANSVILLE IN MIDWEEK DOUBLEHEADER

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team took a break from Ohio Valley Conference play with a dominating performance at Evansville with a clean sweep of a midweek doubleheader, pulling off wins of 3-0 and 5-2. The sweep gives the Skyhawks a winning record for the first time this season and a three game winning streak.
The Skyhawks (17-16-1) received several outstanding performances on the day, led by the play of freshman Taylor Manning who posted a perfect batting average after going 4-for-4 on the day with a double and an RBI. Junior Kenzi Tate joined in the action with a .571 average to go with four hits and two RBIs. Sophomore Deven Wilson had a standout performance, notching a home run in both games, tallying three RBIs on the day.
Four pitchers saw action in the doubleheader, posting a combined ERA of 1.00. Tate started Game One, tossing a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out three on the day. Elizabeth Wiegand started game two, pitching three innings and allowing two earned runs. Casey Vincent tallied the victory in Game Two, tossing three perfect innings while striking out three. Brooke Kennedy tossed one inning of relief, striking out one to earn the save.
Game One: UT Martin 3, Evansville 0
UT Martin wasted little time getting on the board to start the day. Kelsey Dixon led off the game with a single to left field, before ultimately moving to third following an error on a sacrifice bunt by Kayla Wade. Wade made the most of her opportunity, swiping her first of two stolen bases on the day. With runners on second and third with no outs, Tate supported her own cause by stroking a single to center field for an RBI.
The Skyhawks would strike again in the top of the third inning as Samantha McClure led off the inning with a double to left field. Tate would strike again in the inning, tallying her second RBI of the game with a single to right field to give the Skyhawks the 2-0 advantage.
With the game under control with the stellar pitching of Tate, UT Martin would tally one more insurance run in the top of the sixth. Wilson would strike for her first home run of the day in the sixth, notching her second blast of the season.
Game Two: UT Martin 5, Evansville 2
After not scoring at all in Game One, Evansville tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to bust into the scoring column. The Purple Aces tallied back-to-back singles before a walk would load the bases with one out. Evansville would strike for its lone runs of the day in the inning via a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Chandra Parr.
The Skyhawks would take control of the game in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs. Tate would tally her third hit of the day with a single to left field. Tate would quickly come around to score, as Wilson belted her second home run of the day to take the 2-1 advantage.
UT Martin would look to stretch the margin in the top of the sixth inning by tallying another run. Manning would lead off the inning with a single to right field, followed by a bunt single by McClure. With runners in scoring position, Dixon would tally an RBI single to score pinch runner Bella Zizzi.
With a two-run lead in the final inning of play, the Skyhawks would tally another pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Freshmen Renate Meckl and Carly Gonzales would lead off the inning with back-to-back singles. Manning would tally her fourth and final hit of the day with an RBI single to center field to score pinch runner Gabby Glenn. McClure would tally her lone RBI of the day after being hit with a pitch, forcing in the final run of the game.
UT Martin will look to continue its three game winning streak this weekend when they host a pair of OVC doubleheaders. The Skyhawks will take on Tennessee State for a twinbill on Saturday, April 5 before facing Belmont for a pair on Sunday, April 6. Both days of action from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
