MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team closes out the month of March with a three-game weekend series against Ohio Valley Conference co-leader Southeast Missouri at Skyhawk Field on March 28-30. Because of the threat of heavy rain on Friday evening, Game 1 will now be played at 3 p.m. Saturday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m. while Sunday is set to start at 1 p.m.
The Skyhawks (3-19, 2-7 OVC) have only played in front of the home crowd four times this season but are approaching a stretch where UT Martin will play 14 of its next 22 games at home.
UT Martin lost two of three last weekend at OVC preseason favorite Tennessee Tech, falling 14-5 on Friday, winning 7-5 on Saturday and falling 2-0 on Sunday. Jake Deason led the Skyhawk offense with a .400 batting average in the series while Ben Upton drove in four runs for UT Martin. The Skyhawk bullpen was solid over the weekend, as UT Martin’s top five relievers combined for a 2.16 ERA in 8.1 innings, including Carter Smith (mound victory in Game 2) and John Houston (save in Game 2).
Junior left-hander Taylor Cox (0-5, 6.46 ERA) is expected to start on the mound for UT Martin in Game 1, followed by junior southpaw Dalton Potts (0-3, 9.11) in Game 2. Junior righty Alex Martin (0-4, 3.03) is slated to make the start in the series finale.
Southeast Missouri (14-10, 7-2 OVC) enters the series tied with SIU Edwardsville atop the league standings. The Redhawks swept Belmont and Eastern Kentucky on the road before dropping two of three to Morehead State last weekend at home.
Derek Gibson leads Southeast Missouri in batting average (.414), RBI’s (27) and slugging percentage (.563) while catcher Scott Mitchell is hitting .652 in OVC play (15-for-23) to pace the Redhawk offense, who leads the OVC with 37 stolen bases.
Southeast Missouri’s announced probable starters are junior righty Tyler Iago (3-1, 4.60 ERA) in Game 1, junior right-hander Ryan Lenaburg (2-2, 4.04) in Game 2 and junior righty Travis Hayes (3-0, 2.51) in Game 3. Garret Stockton has four saves to lead a Redhawk bullpen that has notched an OVC-high 10 saves.
