LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team jumped up a spot in the final standings at the UALR First Tee Classic, finishing in sixth place with a total score of 916 (+52) at the Chenal Country Club.
The Skyhawks tallied 313 strokes in the third round today – which was the fifth-lowest score out of the 12 teams in the field. Louisiana-Monroe won the team championship with a final score of 889 (+25).
Brendon Caballero’s 75 proved to be the best score for UT Martin this morning and also tied for the fourth-best score of the third round. He was followed closely by Ben Reeves (77) and Austin Swafford (79). Clay Harbin and Tyler Shellnut carded a final round of 82 and 83, respectively.
Reeves and Swafford tied for the team lead in overall score (228, +12). Shellnut and Harbin were each responsible for a 234 (+18) while Caballero concluded play with a 243 (+27).
“It was cold and we were facing 25 mile per hour winds all day long,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Scoring was a premium and I told our guys we had to survive and gut it out because the scores would be tough for everybody. I was proud of the way they hung in there to beat some good teams.”
The Skyhawks will take next weekend off from competitive action before resuming the spring season on April 5-8 at the Red Wolves Classic, hosted by Arkansas State University.
