GOLF TEAM RANKS FOURTH AFTER TWO ROUNDS AT BOBBY NICHOLS INTERCOLLEGIATE
March 17, 2014
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – After 36 holes of play at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team ranks fourth out of 12 teams in the tournament hosted by Tennessee Tech University.
The Skyhawks are sitting at 595 (+19) overall after a first round score of 299 and a second round tally of 296. Tennessee (-11) ranks first in the field and is the only team under par through two rounds.
“The first round was played in less than ideal conditions,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We played in steady, light rain and it was foggy and very cold. The course was muddy and it was hard to keep your hands and feet warm. In the second round, the rain quit but it got colder as we went along. I was very disappointed because at one time in the second round we were around par or under par and most of the guys had a hard time finishing the round and that cost us about eight to 10 strokes.”
Ben Reeves leads the Skyhawks with 146 (+2; 74, 72), which is tied for 11th out of 74 golfers in the event. Austin Swafford (+4; 74, 74) ranks in the top-20 while Clay Harbin (74, 77) and John Michael Sisinni (77, 74) each carded a 151 (+7). Tyler Shellnut rounded out the team scoring with a total of 153 (+9; 77, 76).
Tyler Guy competed as an individual, shooting a 161 (+17; 83, 78).
The third and final round begins on Tuesday, March 18 at 9 a.m. CT.
