The 2014 Grover Page Classic is a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by The University of Tennessee at Martin and hosted at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn. The 78-player field is made up of 12 teams, including six from the state of Tennessee and five Ohio Valley Conference member institutions, along with 18 participants competing as individuals. The par 72 Jackson Country Club course is playing at a length of 6,783 yards.

Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said of today’s rounds that, “Our first round was not as good as we wanted. However, we came back strong and shot one-under as a team in round two, and any time we shoot under par I’m happy.”

Speaking of Shellnut’s second round showing, Carpenter added that, “He played exceptionally well the second round and his 5-under tied for low score of the round.”

Four Skyhawks are also competing in the Grover Page Classic as individuals, led by Austin Swafford who sits in a tie for eighth place at even-par 144. Two strokes back, alone in 14th position, is John Michael Sisinni at 2-over-par 146. Gavin Shellnut is at 6-over-par 150, while Peyton Deming rounded out the individual scoring at 8-over-par 152.

“I was also very proud of our individuals today,” Carpenter added. “They played exceptionally well in the first round and continued playing smart in round two.”

In the team competition Lipscomb leads at 9-under-par 567, with Tennessee Tech three strokes back at 6-under-par 570. The Skyhawks sit in third at 8-over-par 584, with Jackson State in fourth at 20-over-par 596 and Northern Kentucky rounding out the top five at 21-over-par 597.

Tennessee Tech’s Adam Cunningham leads the individual race at 7-under-par 137, one stroke ahead of Lipscomb’s Caston Roberts who sits at 6-under-par 136. Union’s Bryce Doughty, Lipscomb’s Paul Klein-Kracht and Shellnut each sit at 2-under-par 142 to round out the top five scoring.

Final round play at the Grover Page Classic will begin Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m., followed by a ceremony honoring the 2014 champions. UT Martin will be looking to hoist the tournament trophy for a third consecutive year and fourth time overall in the last seven years.

“I’d love to be sitting higher, but all and all we are in good position for tomorrow’s final round. It’ll be hard to make up a lot of ground this time, but we’ll get out there and battle. JCC is a tremendous host for this event. They do an outstanding job and we appreciate their efforts."
