JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell behind early and could not recover until it was too late this afternoon at Jacksonville State, falling 6-2 to the Gamecocks at Rudy Abbott Field.

The Skyhawks (1-12, 0-2 Ohio Valley Conference) trailed 6-0 through five innings and did not get on the scoreboard until they tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. However, the UT Martin rally came too late.

Jake Deason went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored today while Chase Young accounted for the Skyhawks’ other RBI. Taylor Cox scored UT Martin’s other run in the top of the ninth.

Starting pitcher Dalton Potts was sharp for the majority of his outing but fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing five earned runs with six strikeouts over 6.1 frames. John Skubina made short work of Jacksonville State out of the bullpen, needing only 14 pitches to get through 1.2 scoreless innings.

Potts compiled two scoreless innings to begin the game. The Skyhawk offense placed runners on second and third with just one out in the top of the third but couldn’t push across a run.

Jacksonville State got on the scoreboard with four runs off two hits and an error in the third. Potts then racked up a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless fourth before the Gamecocks added two runs in the fifth to go on top 6-0.

The Skyhawks placed two men on base in the sixth but remained scoreless. Skubina helped UT Martin escape a bases loaded, one-out jam in the seventh, tallying a called strikeout and fielder’s choice groundout to keep the score at 6-0.

Skubina also posted a clean eighth inning after UT Martin threw a runner out at home who was trying to advance on a groundout to third base.

Cox pinch hit to leadoff the ninth and responded with a walk. Taylor Douglas was then hit by a pitch and three pitches later, Deason roped a double into the gap in left center to get the Skyhawks on the scoreboard. Two batters later, Young singled in Deason to make the score 6-2 but the Skyhawks’ rally came up just short.

Game 3 of the series is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
