SKYHAWK SOFTBALL PICKS UP SWEEP IN OPENING DAY OF UCF SPRING GAMES

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team picked up two convincing wins over Colgate 7-1, before knocking off Western Carolina 2-0 to pick up a sweep on the opening day of the UCF Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.
Offensively, juniors Lauren Smith and Kelsey Dixon led the way for the Skyhawks. Smith paced the team with four hits while driving in three runs. Dixon tallied three hits in six at-bats while notching two RBIs of their own. Both Kayla Wade and Gaby Glenn each tallied multi-hit performances while Juli Layne, Samantha McClure and Deven Wilson each tallied an RBI.
A pair of freshman pitchers pitched complete game shutouts as the Skyhawks turned to Elizabeth Wiegand (5-2) and Brooke Kennedy (1-0). Wiegand got the win over Colgate, tossing seven inning of work, while striking out one and allowing no earned runs. Kennedy got the start against Western Carolina, pitching a career-high seven innings while striking out nine and allowing just two hits on the evening.
Game One: UT Martin 7, Colgate 1
The Skyhawks got on the board early to put Colgate in an eventual insurmountable hole. Dixon led off the game with a single down the left field line before swiping second. Dixon would then move to third before scoring on an RBI double by Wilson to left center. Wilson would eventually come around to score on a passed ball. Smith would tally the knockout punch with a double into center field, plating a pair and giving the Skyhawks and early 4-0 lead.
Colgate would tally its lone run of the afternoon in the bottom of the third inning. After leading off the inning with a single down the right field line, the Raiders would get their run across the plate on a successful steal of home.
UT Martin would add on another pair of runs in the ensuing inning. Glenn singled to the pitcher before stealing second base. McClure would bring Glenn home on an RBI double down the left field line. McClure’s time on the basepaths was limited as Dixon singled through the right side to plate the shortstop.
The Skyhawks would add their final run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single through the left side to score Bella Zizzi.
Wiegand was dominant on the afternoon, tossing another complete game shutout. She struck out one while allowing no earned runs on the day.
Game Two: UT Martin 2, Western Carolina 0
UT Martin and Western Carolina battled throughout the first six innings before the Skyhawks tallied the only runs they would need to pick up the victory over the Catamounts.
Pinch hitter Carly Gonzales tallied a single into right field with one out, before swing second. Gonzales would eventually come around to score, ending the stalemate with an RBI single to left field. Glenn would tally a single of her own on the following play before Layne tallied her first RBI of the season with an infield single.
Two runs would be enough for Kennedy who tallied her first career start, tossing seven shutout innings of work. She struck out nine batters on the night while limiting her walks and hits allowed to two.
UT Martin will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 8 when it caps of its final non-conference tournament of the season. Action from the UCF Spring Fling against Troy is scheduled for 8 a.m.
