MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin interim head baseball coach Brad Goss makes a return to his home state when the Skyhawks take on their second straight Southland Conference opponent in Central Arkansas for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, March 5. First pitch time for Game 1 is set for noon with Game 2 (a seven-inning affair) set to begin at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Goss, who grew up in Russellville and attended college at Arkansas Tech, is guiding UT Martin through the most treacherous portion of its schedule - as the Skyhawks play eight road games in three states over the span of 10 days. This series was originally scheduled as single games on Tuesday and Wednesday before inclement weather altered the series schedule.
UT Martin (1-10) is coming off a tough weekend road set at Stephen F. Austin. The Skyhawks were swept but led Game 2 of the series after seven innings of play and narrowly fell 1-0 in the series finale. Taylor Douglas led the UT Martin offense with a .364 batting average over the weekend.
Against the Bears, the Skyhawks will start redshirt senior right-hander Alex Boshers (0-1, 3.00 ERA) in Game 1. Boshers has delivered a pair of solid midweek starts after making the recovery from Tommy John surgery in March 2013. In the doubleheader night cap, UT Martin will have a staff pitching day - giving several Skyhawks the chance to see time on the mound.
Central Arkansas (6-4) ended last season ranked No. 25 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and handed eventual national runner-up Mississippi State its only postseason loss up until the College World Series finals.
The Bears enter this game having won three straight, defeating North Dakota twice and Illinois State at home over the weekend.
Doug Votolato’s .375 batting average paces Central Arkansas while Tyler Langley (12 RBI’s) and Chris Townsend (10) provide the thump in the Bear lineup.
Probable starting pitchers have not been announced yet for Central Arkansas but candidates for the Bears include junior right-hander Connor McClain (0-1, 8.64) and redshirt freshman righty Brandon Schmidt (0-1, 16.20).
