ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team could not overcome a big third inning by College of Charleston, eventually dropping the 4-1 decision to wrap up the UCF Holiday Inn Tournament.
The Skyhawks (5-10-1) saw sophomore Deven Wilson lead the team with a pair of hits in three plate appearances. Freshman Carly Gonzales tallied the team’s lone RBI of the day while joining Kenzi Tate, Gabby Glenn and Samantha McClure with one hit each.
Freshman Elizabeth Wiegand (3-2) got the start for the Skyhawks, earning the tough loss while tossing six innings, striking out a pair and allowing no earned runs. Sophomore Autumn Glenn appeared in relief, pitching one inning while allowing a hit and issuing a walk.
College of Charleston (12-7) was led by the play of shortstop Lizzy Vaughn who paced the team with two base hits and the team’s lone RBI. The Cougars turned to pitcher Samantha Martin (4-1) in the circle, tossing a complete game. Martin allowed six hits while striking out four and allowing one earned run.
The Cougars got on the mound first in the top of the third inning, exploding for four runs on three hits and two errors. After the leadoff hitter reached base following a fielding error, she moved to second on a successful bunt putting runners at first and second with no outs. The Skyhawks picked up the first out of the inning when catching the runner in scoring position going from second to third on a fielder’s choice. Vaughn would tally the first blow, singling a run in from second before advancing to second on the throw. The Skyhawks would tally the second out after a fielder’s choice resulted in nailing a Cougar runner at the plate.
Charleston would blow the game open on the ensuing play. With runners at first and third with two outs, Mackenzie Maples would single before advancing to second on a throwing error by the left fielder, eventually joining Carly Corthell and Vaughn coming around to score. All four runs in the inning were unearned.
The Skyhawks would strike in the bottom of the fifth, tallying one run on three hits. Gabby Glenn would single up the middle with two outs before McClure moved Gabby Glenn to third base on a bunt single. Gonzales drove an RBI single up the middle, scoring Gabby Glenn from third base. The Skyhawks final threat would be extinguished with a fielder’s choice.
