February 25, 2014
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team took home a pair of weekly honors this afternoon as senior Heather Butler was selected as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week while freshman Ashia Jones took home adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Freshman of the Week honors.
Butler garnered Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors from the TSWA after moving into 24th place on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list with her 10th 20-point plus game in the last 13 outings this season. The Medina, Tenn., native posted 29 points with six 3-pointers in an 84-67 victory over Murray State, giving the senior guard 2,738 career points. She reached double figures for the 124th consecutive game, which ranks eighth on the all-time NCAA list. This is Butler’s second TSWA Player of the Week honor on the season.
After being named both OVC Player and Freshman of the Week last week, Jones tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds against Murray State. Jones has stretched her double figure scoring streak to 12 consecutive games, while scoring 20 points or more in four straight contests. This marks the fifth time this season in which Jones has taken home at least a share of the OVC weekly honor.
The Skyhawks will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 27 when they cap off the road portion of the schedule with a trip to Eastern Illinois. Tipoff from Lantz Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
