February 21, 2014
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The conclusion to Game 1 of the University of Tennessee at Martin and Eastern Michigan baseball series has been postponed until Saturday, Feb. 22.
The Skyhawks trailed 11-3 with two outs in the top of the ninth until the game was halted because of a 10:30 p.m. curfew set by Belmont University. The two teams will pick up where they left off on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m., followed by Game 2 of the three-game series.
UT Martin was hampered by six errors in the field that led to six unearned runs. Taylor Cox earned the start on the mound for UT Martin, shutting down the Eagles over the first three frames before allowing four earned runs in 6.2 innings. He allowed six hits while striking out six batters. John Skubina came on in relief in the seventh and had conceded one earned run over two frames when the game was delayed.
At the plate, freshman Ben Upton drilled the Skyhawks’ first homer of the season, cranking a two-run opposite field shot as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh. Nico Zych drove in UT Martin’s first run of the game in the fourth inning while Phil Sorensen and Max Balter scored a run for the Skyhawks.
Eastern Michigan broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth before the Skyhawks got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. The Eagles added a pair of runs in the sixth and one more run in the seventh before Upton’s longball made the score 7-3 after seven complete innings.
The Eagles compiled four runs in the top of the ninth and will have runners at first and second base when game action resumes tomorrow.
